Most people hear "hybrid pickup" and picture something built for a fuel-economy sticker. The PowerBoost is not that. Ford took the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 — already the strongest mainstream engine in the F-150 — and put a 47-horsepower electric motor between it and the 10-speed automatic, fed by a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The result is 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque: more twist than the 5.0-liter V8, more than the non-hybrid 3.5, more than the Raptor's high-output engine, and more than anything Ford puts in an F-150 short of the supercharged Raptor R. The electric motor delivers its share instantly, from zero rpm, which is exactly what a loaded truck wants pulling a trailer off the line or merging onto GA-400. The efficiency is a bonus. And it does something no gas truck does.
