The fifth-generation 4Runner went on sale in 2010 and was still being built, largely unchanged, in 2024. Fifteen model years. Almost nothing in the modern car business survives that long, and the 4Runner did it because people kept buying it exactly as it was. Then, for 2025, Toyota finally replaced it — and this is one of the first year of the new one, with 16,856 miles on it and Toyota's own certification behind it.

What actually changed is everything that needed to. The old 4.0-liter V6 and its five-speed automatic are gone, replaced by the i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged four making 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque through an 8-speed automatic. Look past the cylinder count and look at where that torque lives: 317 lb-ft at 1,700 rpm. The old V6 made less torque and made you rev for it. This one hands you everything just off idle, which is precisely what you want pulling a trailer, climbing a grade, or crawling up a rutted road. It is rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds when properly equipped. And it sits on Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame architecture — the same global truck platform underneath the Tacoma, the Tundra and the Land Cruiser. This is still a real truck-based SUV. It just finally has a modern one underneath it.

SR5 is the trim that reminds you why people buy 4Runners. Not for the badge on the fender — for the fact that it is a durable, honest, body-on-frame vehicle with a squared-off shape, a big usable cargo hold behind a split-folding rear seat, and a reputation for still being worth real money after a decade of hard use. The SR5 gets you all of the structure and all of the mechanical content, with a touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and 17-inch wheels on tall-sidewall tires — which, if you ever intend to leave pavement, is the wheel size you actually want.
