We are a Toyota store, so we will say this plainly: the hybrid system in this Forester is built around Toyota's. Subaru licensed the core of the Toyota Hybrid System — the same fundamental architecture behind more than 25 years and tens of millions of Toyota hybrids — and engineered it around its own 2.5-liter horizontally opposed boxer engine. On a wet GA-400 morning the difference is invisible. On a muddy two-track north of Dahlonega with one wheel in the air, it is the whole difference. It is the only hybrid in its class built this way.

Limited is the trim with the equipment. StarTex water-repellent upholstery in black — Subaru's answer to leather for people who own dogs and hike, it shrugs off wet gear and wipes clean — with heated front seats, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, and the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The original owner added the auto-dimming mirror package — a $791 option — with an interior auto-dimming mirror with compass and HomeLink and an auto-dimming exterior mirror with approach lighting, plus a rear bumper cover and a cargo tray to protect the two surfaces a Forester gets used hardest.

The safety content is Subaru's EyeSight. A pre-collision braking system with pedestrian detection that watches the road ahead through a stereo camera and can brake on its own, adaptive cruise control that holds your following distance down to a stop, and lane centering that keeps you between the lines while it runs.
