For eight model years the Tacoma barely changed, and its owners liked it that way. Then 2024 arrived and Toyota rebuilt it from the frame up — the first all-new Tacoma since 2016, on the same platform as the current Tundra and Land Cruiser, with a body that finally looks like the truck people imagined when they said "Tacoma." The change that matters most is under the hood. The old 3.5-liter V6 is gone, replaced by the i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and the number to know is torque: the new engine makes far more of it than the V6 did, and delivers it low in the rev range, where a truck pulling a boat out of Lake Lanier or climbing a grade with a bed full of mulch actually needs it. The V6 had to be revved. The turbo simply pulls. Through the eight-speed automatic — two more gears than the old truck — it is the difference between a Tacoma that keeps up and one that does not have to try.

The rest of the truck caught up too. The cabin is the biggest change owners of the old truck notice — a proper modern dashboard with a large touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a seating position that no longer feels like sitting on the floor, and real storage. The original owner added the SR5 Upgrade Package ($3,005), a spray-on bedliner ($575) that protects the bed from the first load onward, and bed deck rails with cleats ($70) for tying down whatever is back there. Black fabric is the honest material for a truck that goes outside — it does not scald you in July and it does not show red clay.

The safety content is Toyota's newest suite. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0: a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection that watches the road ahead and can brake on its own, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control that holds your following distance down to a stop, and lane tracing assist that keeps you centered while it runs.
